Richard E. Jordan began his duties as Chief of Staff to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners in December 2015, following his retirement as a Colonel in the United States Marine Corps.

The Chief of Staff reports to the Board, the five-member governing body for the Port of Long Beach, and assists them in making key decisions.He coordinates all administrative and communications functions for the Board, serves as a personal advisor on general issues, makes recommendations on policy issues and coordinates trade missions and conferences, among other duties.

Mr. Jordan’s last assignment in the Marine Corps was as the Director of Enlisted Professional Military Education, as a part of Marine Corps University in Quantico, Va., where he oversaw six academies located around the globe that educated more than 7,500 Marines annually.Previously, he was the Strategy and Policy Division Chief for United States Central Command from June 2011 to June 2014.In that role, he interacted with civilian leadership from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and developed both policy and strategy for the Middle East.

He was promoted to colonel in 2011, and has been responsible for as many as 400 Marines.In 2010 he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, 2005, and 2008.From 1993 to 2008, he served with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons (HMLA) as well as other assignments in California and with Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) in Yuma, Ariz.He joined the Marines in 1990 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, following his designation as a naval aviator.

Born in Houston, Mr. Jordan graduated in 1990 from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.In 2011, he earned a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.
